Media Evaluation 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
For our media creative production we had to make three media items a teaser trailer, a magazine cover and a poster promoting an upcoming film, we created a teaser trailer to appeal to a certain audience, for teenagers aged 15 onwards, trailers are created to make the audience aware of the upcoming film and give them an insight into what it is about, bringing up the hype about it. We decided to post out teaser trailer on YouTube which is a good way to promote our film as many people use it daily all around the world.
All three products will contain the same character as it will be easier for the audience to know what film it is and be able to relate them together. To make our teaser trailer seem like a real trailer I watched different horror/ thriller trailers such as Saw, The Signal and Dead Silence I watched these specific ones as they are similar to our story idea, I also watched the Hunger Games trailer, although it is not a horror or a thriller the context of the film was similar to our film idea. All these trailers have helped us create our finished product to the best of our ability. I looked at the different camera angles and the soundtrack that was used in all of them so I could incorporate that into our trailer to make it captivating for the audience, we decided to stick to normal camera angles on the tripod although did break away from normal conventions by using it handheld to give the audience a sense of being there. The soundtrack we used created suspense within the trailer.
An example of one teaser trailer I watched
We decided to change the contrast of our film footage as we wanted a gloomy look to make it creepier and more like a real horror film trailer. We tried not to break any conventions from a real horror film trailer as we thought it would be better to stick to it to make it look more real, we decided to only film in one location as we wanted to create a claustrophobic feel to give the audience an insight in to what the real film will entail.
Once the editing of the teaser trailer was complete I moved onto constructing my magazine and poster again to make sure I had this done to the best of my ability I looked at real horror and thriller posters and magazine covers. The poster that gave me most influence was Dead Silence, I chose to do something similar to that because it was simple yet effective.
The poster I decided to get my main idea from was Empire I liked the way everything was positioned on the cover and the colours used, by sticking to the way this magazine cover looks I could make mine look as real as possible
I decided to stick mainly to the codes and conventions of a horror movie only breaking them once or twice when we decided to use the camera handheld and by only using one location by breaking the conventions we appeal to a wider audience, however by sticking to the codes and conventions people will know what to expect and they will enjoy because they know what to expect.
